REPORTED TO HAVE A STRONG SELECTIVITY FOR CADDISFLY LARVAE; SHOW SEASONAL VARIATION IN FOOD CONSUMED *TN5018*; HAS BEEN OBSERVED EATING NOTURUS EXILIS EGGS *TN5186* This species will generally forage on zooplankton, aquatic insects, and snails *2209*. They are reported to have fed on the eggs of creek chub (Semotilus astromaculatus), brook lamprey (Lampetra appendix), and stone- roller (Campostoma anomalum) *2138*. In many areas the major food is midge larvae, and is supplemented by caddisfly, mayfly, other insect larvae and other invertebrates. In Ohio, caddisfly larvae was most important *4205*.
