Comments
This species belongs to the subgenus Nothonotus. It apparently diverged early and relationships with other Nothonotus species are unclear. The Clinch system population is distinctive but unnamed *816*. It was previously called Etheostoma sciotense *2208*. This species hybridizes with the bluebreast darter *1306*. It is one of the smallest of all darters, and differs in aspects of squamation, position of cephalic lateralis pore and features of coloration. The taxonomic data of a series from Duck River, lower Tennessee drainage, conforms to those from the Clinch, indicating that all populations of the drainage compose one unit *4205*. Zorach (1969) declined to recognize this form nomenclaturally, but it could be described as a full species *4205*.
