Physical description: This is a small shiner-like chub with a terminal barbel and a black lateral stripe. The adults are usually from 45-65 mm SL. The body profile and compression are moderate and the dorsal fin origin is over the pelvic fin origin. The head is moderate with the snout somewhat short and broadly rounded. The eye is large, slightly oval and slightly supralateral. The mouth is small, inferior and horizontal. The frenum is absent. The lips are moderate and the barble is small and terminal. Tubercles in males are small to tiny, and best developed on the head dorsum, anterodorsal body and pectoral fin. The genital por area of the nuptial female is moderately enlarged. There are 1,4-4,1 pharyngeal teeth and the lateral line is complete with (34)35-37(38) scales. There are 9-11(12) scales around the back, (9)11(13) around the belly, (20)22-24(27) circumbody scales, and 12(13) circumpeduncle scales. There are (11)12-14(15) predorsal scale rows, 8 dorsal rays, (18)19(20) principal caudal rays, (7)8(10) anal rays, (7)8(9) pelvic rays and (13)14-16(17) pectoral rays. The breast is naked. The upper body is straw to pale olive and the side is silver with a dark stripe and caudal spot sometimes obvious. The venter is silver-white. The fins are pale, and most of the pectoral fin and its base have a yellow tinge in some males *4205*. Reproduction: The breeding season is late April to June *2980,4205*. Breeding adults were collected in June in Missouri *1187*. They mature at age class II *788*, although possibly a large part are mature by age 1 *4205*. Breeding males have tubercles on the head *816,788,789*. They attain a length of nearly 2 by end of 2nd summer, and adults are commonly 2.5-3, with a maximum of about 3.5 *1187*. Behavior: They feed on the bottom of a stream, lake or pond, mostly by sight *1187*. Limiting factors: They need clean sand and gravel bottoms to spawn, and siltation is detrimental *4205,2539,1444*.
