TN00157 STREAMLINE CHUB HYBOBSIS DISSIMILIS

Physical description: This is a strongly elongate minnow with an inferior mouth, a barbel and usually a row of large spots on the side. They are usually from 60-100 mm SL. The body is terete and the dorsal fin origin is distinctly anterior to the pelvic fin origin. The head and snout are of moderate length and the snout is broadly rounded or almost pointed. The eye is moderate to somewhat large and lateral or slightly supralateral. The mouth lips and barbel are the same as in H. cahni. Papillate taste buds are usually absent from the isthum, although sometimes 1 or 2 are present. They have 4-4 pharyngeal teeth and the lateral line is complete with (42)44- 48(50) scales. There are (28)30-33(36) circumbody scales (12)15-16(17) circumpeduncle scales and 18-21(23) predorsal scale rows. There are 8 dorsal rays, 19 principal caudal rays, (6)7 anal rays, (7)8-9 pelvic rays and (16)17-19 pectoral rays. The breast is naked. The back and upper sides are pale olive with iridescent silver or pale green, sometimes with pale gold glints. The spots are pale violet, blue or black, and some fish have a blue and violet sheen on the midside. The lower side and belly are silvery white. The head dorsum is olive, the side gold, silver and violet. The iris is dusky, silver and/or gold *4205*. Reproduction: Spawning occurs from late April to late May in Virginia. A male was in reproductive condition on April 25th. Most females taken on May 2nd were partly spent, and almost all from late May were mostly spent. Fecundity averages 400 eggs *4205*. Behavior: This species feeds from the upper surface of stones. It consumes a variety of benthic insect larvae and other invertebrates including primarily mayflies, caddisflies and midges. It also takes a large amount of microscopic and larger plant material. They inhabit riffles but are more common in slow runs and well flowing portions of pools with clean small to large gravel and gravel-rubble mix *4205*. Limiting factors: This species disappears from a riffle when it becomes silted *4205*. Population parameters: This species matures in one year. The oldest fish are 2 years and a few month old. Fecundity averages 400 eggs *4205*. Aquatic/terrestrial associations: Ths species hybridizes with the gravel chub, H. x-punctata *4205*.
