This is a nonparasitic lamprey with one dorsal fin, myomeres (53)55-59, and of moderate size, adults about 120-160 mm TL. Teeth short, blunt weakly keratinized in premature specimens, to usually long, sharp, moderately to well keratinized, but not angulate in most fully mature specimens; circumoral teeth (19)21-31(33); bicuspid circumoral teeth (5)8-11(13); supraoral cusps (6)7-9(11); infraoral cusps (7)8-11(13); anterior row teeth (3)4-5; lateral cusps (6)7-9(11); transverse lingual lamina moderately to well keratinized, moderately to highly bilobed, its largest denticles minute to moderate, total denticles (6)8-15(18). Measurments in % TL. Disk diameter (3.6)3.8-5.2(5.4); snout length (5.6)6.0-8.0(8.8); eye length (1.1)1.2-1.5(1.6); branchial length (8.9)9.2-10.7(11.0); tail length (28.5)30.1-33.8(34.5), averaging longest in male; body depth (6.1)7.0-9.3(9.8); first dorsal fin height (1.6)2.0- 3.7(4.1), averaging lowest in prematurity, highest in mature male. A late nuptial male with back and side of trunk heavily mottled pale and dark olive, tail uniform olive, belly mostly white. Dots on head and body blackish; disk area orangish; inner iris silvery. Fins yellow- olive to pale olive. Prenuptial female similar but mottling confined mostly to tail and belly. A nuptial female has pronounced reticulation the lenght of the trunk, dark markings dark olive, interspaces silvery- gray *4205*. Reproduction: Spawning took place in Indian Creek, a Powell River tributary, Virginia, on 24 April 1971, water 15 degrees C. The larval period in North Carolina ia 5.5 or 6.2 years with most of the larger, older individuals being female. Nests are built in slow to moderate riffles just above swift riffles. The peak of nest building and spawning occured in mid-afternoon, in water 18.8 degrees C. *4205*. Behavior: The larvae burrow and are filter feeders. They consume bacteria, protozoans, decayed phytoplankton and/or detritus. The adults are non-parasitic *4205*. Limiting factors: Adults may require a clean substrate for spawning *4205*.
