Life History

This is a nonparasitic lamprey of moderate size with the adults from 120-180 mm TL. They have 2 dorsal fins and high mymere numbers, (63)66-71(74); dorsal fins low to moderate and seperate in larvae; elevated and barely seperate to moderately conjoined, but deeply notched with a line of fusion evident, in adults. The teeth are usually moderate to well keratinized, moderate in lenght, tips somewhat rounded; marginals in one uniformly arranged series; anterior intermediate teeth 10-28; lateral intermediate teeth absent; posterior circumorals usually minute, forming single complete series, numbering 17-24; lateral circumoral tooth groups 3 per side, each bicuspid or, less often, two cusps completed divided at gum level; supraoral plate with one large undivided cusp per side, rarely an additional small medial cusp; infraoral cusps 5-8; lingual laminae denticulate to serrate, transverse lamina with 7-11 cusps, medial one enlarged. Measurements in % TL. Disk lenght 3.2-6.0; snout length 5.2-7.0; prebrancial length 10.4-13.7; eye length 1.2-2.6; branchial length 9.0-11.9; tail length 24.0-32.3; first dorsal fin height 1.3-2.9; second dorsal fin height 2.3-6.1; body length 5.2-8.7; disk snout , prebranchial and tail lengths and dorsal fin heights greatest in male, body depth greatest in female. Newly-transformed adults yellow- brown on back and sides, silver-gray below. Prespawning adults dark tan to slate brown on back and side, lighter below, fins yellow tinged. Spawning adults blue-black *4205*. Reproduction: Spawning occured in mid- to late March in eastern Tennessee, and from 28 March to 4 April in Deleware. Over its total range, spawning occures at between 6.8-20.5 degrees C. *4205*. Behavior: Ammocoetes consume largely small aldae and the adults do not feed. This species is aggresive at spawning sites in runs and riffles *4205*. Population Parameters: Fecundity rangers from 1327-3787 ova. The life span is from 5-8 years *4205*.
