Comments on Management Practices

MAINTENANCE OF WEED INFESTATION LEVELS ABOVE 30-50% AREAL COVERAGE OVERABUNDANT AQUATIC VEGETATION SHOULD BE CONTROLLED AND MAINTAINED AT STOCKING SUPPLEMENTAL FORAGE SPECIES *5388*; MANIPULATING POPULATION CAN LEAD TO REDUCED CONDITION AND SLOW GROWTH RATES *2618, 5373* INTERMEDIATE LEVELS TO INCREASE FORAGING EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTION STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS USING DIFFERENT HARVEST REGULATIONS SUCH AS MINIMUM LENGTHS, PROTECTED SLOT LIMITS, AND CREEL LIMITS *5387* RATES *5383, 5384, 5385* Largemouths are probably best suited for stocking in only slightly alkaline lakes with a total range of 900, a carbonate alkaline range of 250, and a potassium and sodium range of 200 *7014*. A 12 inch length limit resulted in stock-piling of bass under the length limit and bluegill population numbers decreased. The length limit provided large numbers of bass for sport fishing *7016*. A minimum length limit on bass combined with staggering the initial stocking of forage fishes and stocking several sizes of bass appears to be the best technique found *7018*. A 40% harvest quota maintained a balanced fish population that showed good growth of bass. A 40% harvest quota, at least in lakes 10 acres in size and stocked at 100 bass per acre is the maximum harvest that should be used *7017*. No more than 40% of the original stock bass should be removed each year *7019*. A 12 inch length limit improved fish populations. A 15 inch minimum length limit allowed bass to over exploit forage *7020*. A 12 inch length limit and 18 inch channel catfish length limit and a total family bag limit of 5 resulted in stockpiling of protected size adult bass with slow growth. This also resulted in intensive predation on forage fish. One source proposes a slot limit of 12-15 inches protected to cure the stockpiling and intensive predation *7021*. For additional references see *7021*. The control of pond weeds is desirable *1185*. The control of water level fluctuations in ponds and reservoirs is the best management technique to increase production *1271*.
