Temperate basses recently separated from other serranids *2546*. Distinct subpopulations may exist even within a single lake *3298,3299*. They were formerly listed as Roccus or Lopibema, now synonymized with Morone *1140, 1115,1119,835*. In Virginia, they are often referred to as 'stripes' *4205*.
