Comments on General Food Habits

Sources dont indicate what types of algae are consumed only algae *2266, 2256,2259,1473,1476*. The young juveniles reportedly ate fish scales *2259*. The adults feed mainly on aquatic insects but do take some ter- restrial insects, algae, and debris *2266,2256,2259,1473,1476,2257*. One source indicates that algae is the primary food source for juveniles 0-49 mm in total length *1473*.

Comments on Adult Food Habits

Adults are mostly mayflies, midges and blackflies from fast riffles *1114, 1473,1476*. The differences between foods of stream, river, and lake dwellers is documented in the following literature *2266,1473,1476,2257, 2267*.

Comments on Juvenile Food Habits

Algae is predominant in the juveniles diet with some midges and black- flies *1114,1473,1476*. They are reported to eat fish eggs, fish, and fish scales *2259*. Sources reported life stage food habits in various ways wherin at age 0 they ate aquatic insect larvae with minor amounts of algae, diatoms, and sand while at age I juveniles they ate the larvae of Trichoptera, Diptera, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, and terrestrial insects, algae, diatoms, sand, nematodes and lumbricus *2266*; other sources de- fined food habits by size with fish 0-49 mm consuming primarily algae along with diatoms, entomostraca, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Diptera, Trichoptera, terrestrial insects, mites and debris, while fish 50-69 mm ate Diptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Oliogochaeta, Gastropoda, Entomostraca, Mal- acostraca, fish eggs, fish and omitted the mites *2259,1473*.

Comments on Larval Food Habits

Larva feed off of the yolk-sac for 6-8 days after hatching *2251*.
