Will hybridize with brown trout (tiger trout) and rainbow trout *832* Fontinalis means "living in springs"; can be hybridized artificially with lake trout (splake trout) and with rainbow trout; in some cases natural hybrids between brook and brown trout occur (tiger trout); exhibits very little geographic variation in structure and color compared with other widespread trouts; claims that some southern Appalachian populations are subspecifically distinct are unresolved; common Appalachian colloquialisms are native trout and speckled trout *832,4205*
