Life History

Life History Narrative

Very little is known about the natural history of this seemingly rare species. According to Brame (1968:59), these salamanders live within rotting logs and beneath slabs of bark on fallen logs, where they probably feed on small invertebrates. A specimen was found beneath a rock in a parking lot at Palenque, Chiapas (D. B. Wake, pers. comm.). Sanderson (1941:155), who claimed that O. elongata is cannibalistic, related an incident in which a recently collected specimen regurgitated the remains of two smaller individuals of its own kind. I have examined the specimens in question and find Sanderson's account highly improbable. Presumably O. elongata lays terrestrial eggs that undergo direct development.
