2* There is some uncertainty concerning the application of E. rhodopis to frogs in the Yucatan Peninsula. Savage (1987) believed that two superficially similar but distinct species, E. rhodopis and E. chac, occur together throughout much of northern Guatemala and Belize. J. A. Campbell and Vannini (1989:6), however, considered E. rhodopis absent from the Caribbean slope of Guatemala and Belize, and Campbell (pers. comm.) favored the view that only E. chac occurs at the base of the Yucatan Peninsula. Pending thorough study of this issue, I provisionally follow Savage (1989) in recognizing E. rhodopis as present in the Yucatan Peninsula.

2* Locality records: Orange Walk: 2 mi N Gallon Jug (MCZ 37847); Stann Creek: N slope Cockscomb Mts. (CM 9872). This species occurs at low and moderate elevations on the Atlantic slope from San Luis Potos¡ and Veracruz south and eastward through Oaxaca and Chiapas to El Pet‚n, Belize, and northern Honduras. 3* Miller, C.M. Life History Narrative
Eleutherodactylus rhodopis is a terrestrial inhabitant of humid lowland forests. It is so characteristic of that vegetation type that Stuart (1948:24) considered it an index species for virgin lowland forest in Alta Verapaz. In El Pet‚n, Stuart (1934:7) found E. rhodopis at night hopping on the ground near a small aguada, and by day he found specimens hopping on the forest floor (Stuart, 1935:37). Little else is known of the natural history of this species. It must surely prey on small invertebrates, especially insects, and it presumably lays terrestrial eggs within which the larvae undergo direct development.
