Life History

Life History Narrative

Uncommon in the Yucatan Peninsula, S. cyanosticta lives primarily in humid premontane forests. According to Pyburn (1966:2), who studied the species in southern Veracruz, breeding probably continues throughout the rainy season. Pyburn found individuals breeding in shallow pools, in forks of trees, and in depressions in logs. The eggs were deposited as a thin surface film, and the clutch size ranged from about 500 to 2,000 eggs. A captive female produced nine clutches of eggs over a 13-month period, and metamorphosis occurred at snout-vent length of 14 mm (Pyburn, 1966:5).
