2* J. C. Lee (1976) reported the first known specimens of Rana juliani as R. maculata but noted that the tadpoles were distinctive. Hillis and de Sa (1988) showed that the adult and larval morphology of Rana juliani are distinctive enough to warrant specific status and made this a sister species of R. maculata and R. sierramadrensis.
