USGS/NPS Vegetation Mapping Program

Fire Island National Seashore

This project began in the summer of 1999.  We are working with The National Park Service, the USGS Biological Resource Division, the New York Natural Heritage Program, and The Nature Conservancy.  The project will delineate vegetion on the 26-mile barrier island as well as the 600 + acre William Floyd Estate.

We are employing aerial photography and vegetation plot data to delineate and describe the vegetation polygons at a minimum mapping unit of 0.25 ha.  We are also building a GIS that can be used by park personnel and researchers.  This project will continue through August of 2001.
