DATABASE NAME Biological and Conservation Data
DATABASE ACRONYMSBCD
DATABASE ABSTRACT (A brief summary of the data set):
A set of related biological and conservation data files, which track biological data such as taxonomy, distribution, abundance, habitat requirements, quality, condition, and viability; and non-biological data such as land-ownership, land-use and management, and threats to species or their habitats.
PURPOSE OF THE DATABASE:
To manage information on the status and distribution of species, and to a lesser extent, communities; primarily those which are rare on the Navajo Nation.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION (Agency Mandate, etc.):

DATE RANGE OF RECORDS:1856 - 1996, present
IS DATA CONTINUOUS? (Yes or No): No
EXPLAIN GAPS IN THE DATA:
Very spotty before mid-1980's. Records older than that are usually herbarium or museum citations.

HOW OFTEN IS THE INFORMATION UPDATED?
Continually Updated
Irregularly Updated
WHEN WAS THE LAST UPDATE?:
COMMENTS ON UPDATE STATUS:
Whenever we get new information, sometimes daily; we might go a month at the longest without updating.

SPATIAL DOMAIN OF DATA SET
(Lat/Long coordinates, State/Region, etc.):

East = 1065230; West = 1132230;
South = 341500; North = 373000

DATASET CONSTRAINTS: ACCESS TO THE DATABASE
Fees
Other; see comments
COMMENTS REGARDING DATASET ACCESS CONSTRAINTS:
Detailed locational information on highly sensitive species (e.g. raptors, cacti, etc.) is restricted.
DATASET CONSTRAINTS: USE OF THE DATABASE:
Citation requirements
Distribution
COMMENTS REGARDING DATASET USE CONSTRAINTS:
Citation requirements: NNHP should be cited as the information source. Distribution: Information is usually provided for a specific purpose (e.g., a species list for the area around a proposed development project) and should not be distributed for purposes other than its origninal intent.
Other: Because the NNHP database is continually updated, any given information response is only wholly appropriate for its respective request.
DATA ACCURACY:
DATA QUALITY INFORMATION (How accurate is the information?):
Locational data has a qualifier to indicate how accurate the locations are. Questionable information is recorded as such. Data Manager and/or biologists quality control all records that are entered for accuracy. Biologists are in charge of biological data.
QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL MEASURES USED:
See data quality.
ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY, LOGICAL CONSISTENCY, COMPLETENESS & LINEAGE:

DATA REFERENCING: SPATIAL DATA ORGANIZATION & REFERENCING:
DATA SET GEOGRAPHIC REFERENCE INFORMATION (Is it geographically referenced?):
YES, point/location information
YES, by administrative boundary; see comments
YES, by place; see comments
COMMENTS REGARDING DATA REFERENCING:
Point/location: lat/long; beginning to use UTM also.
Administrative Boundary: County, Quad, Watershed
Place: Ecoregion; Ownership
ENTITY AND ATTRIBUTES (What species/system/attributes measured):
1) Element Tracking File: Taxonomy and status of each element (plant, animal, or community), at the global and local (Navajo Nation) levels.
2) Element Ranking File: Contains information on each element's global and local rank.
3) Characterization Abstract File: Contains detailed information about the attributes of each element, such as taxonomy, conservation status, distribution, inventory, migration, food, etc.
4) Element Occurrence Record File: Contains information on the occurrence of priority elements on the Navajo Nation.
5) Source Abstract File: Catalogue of information sources.

Other; see comments.
COMMENTS REGARDING DATABASE CURRENT FORM:
Only NNHP personnel access the database. We provide written summaries of the information, or hardcopies of certain records, when appropriate. 95+ percent of requests for information are for a species list for a development project area.
