DATABASE NAME Biological and Conservation Database
DATABASE ACRONYMSBCD
DATABASE ABSTRACT (A brief summary of the data set):
Information on the status and distribution of natural communities, rare and endangered species of plants and animals, bird rookeries, geological and other natural features is collected, processes and analyzed through an integrated data management system of maps, manual files and a computerized database. Data are indexed by several criteria, including location, natural community type, species name and endangerment status.
PURPOSE OF THE DATABASE:
The mission of the Florida Natural Areas Inventory is to collect, interpret, and disseminate ecological information critical to the conservation of Florida's biological diversity. FNAI's data base and expertise facilitate environmentally sound planning and natural resource management to protect the plants, animals, and communities that represent Florida's natural heritage.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION (Agency Mandate, etc.):
The Florida Natural Areas Inventory was established in 1981 as a cooperative effort of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Headquarters Science Division of The Nature Conservancy, a national non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the preservation of natural diversity. The Conservancy has established similar cooperative ecological inventories in all 50 states. Funding for Florida's program has been provided primarily by the Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) Trust Fund as authorized by Florida Statutes 253.023(5).
