DATABASE ABSTRACT (A brief summary of the data set):
A DOS-based relational database with files that include information concerning rare and endangered species, and high quality examples of natural communities, natural sites and managed areas.
PURPOSE OF THE DATABASE:
The information is used to establish protection priorities, also, to comply with endangered species laws, prevent avoidable impacts on natural resources, prevent disputes over development and for educational and research purposes.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION (Agency Mandate, etc.):
The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission is mandated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky to identify and protect Kentucky's natural heritage for the benefit and enjoyment of all Kentuckians.

Fees for some users. Data services cost $45.00 per hour, with a minimum one hour charge. An additional fee is assessed for the actual costs of maps. Government agencies, non-profit organizations, students, and researchers are provided two hours of data services a month free of charge. Exempt from State Open Records Act.

This product and database has been copyrighted by the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission. Distribution: Locational information for sensitive plants, animals, and natural communities, if released by the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, may not be released in any document or correspondence.

DATA QUALITY INFORMATION (How accurate is the information?):
We can assure that our information is highly accurate, because all data undergo several quality controls; imprecision and questionable ID's are entered as such. They can easily be distinguished from other records.
QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL MEASURES USED:
All incoming information is reviewed by staff biologists to determine degree of accuracy and precision. Data specialists enter all information into a temporary workfile. Only after all datafields have been checked twice by two different people is the info entered into the Biological and Conservation database (BCD).

ENTITY AND ATTRIBUTES (What species/system/attributes measured):
The Nature Preserves Commission currently monitors the statuses of over 650 plant, animal, and natural community elements of Kentucky's natural diversity, considered rare or endangered. Taxonomic, biological, and legal information about each element are continually updated. Data are stored in the Commission's Element Occurrence Database.
The Managed Area Database contains biological, management, legal, and locational information on over 400 areas in Kentucky, including lands managed for conservation purposes by federal, state, and local governments, private individuals, foundations, and corporations.
