DATABASE ABSTRACT (A brief summary of the data set):
Three geographic information system layers showing important plant and wildlife habitat areas. Cerified Vernal Pool layer is a point layer. Rare Wetlands Wildlife and Priority sites layers show estimated habitat polygons.
PURPOSE OF THE DATABASE:
Certified Vernal Pool and Rare Wetlands Wildlife layers are for use with MA Wetlands Protection Act. Priority Sites layer is for use with MA Forest Cutting Regulations. All suited for use in regional planning.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION (Agency Mandate, etc.):
The overall goal of MA NHESP is the preservation of Massachusetts' wide range of biological diversity. Progress towards this goal is accomplished through a comprehensive program of inventory, research, data management, wildlife management, habitat protection, and environmental review.

Vernal Pool points are accurate to .02 mile (91%). Habitat polygons are estimated, not field checked; compiled at 1:25k or 1:24k scale.

ENTITY AND ATTRIBUTES (What species/system/attributes measured):
Certified Vernal Pool layer includes all vernal pools certified by NHESP prior to 1995. Rare Wetlands Wildlife layer includes habitat polygons for all occurrences of MA state-listed, rare, Wetlands Wildlife documented within the last 25 years. Priority Sites layer inlcudes polygons for habitats of rarest species (plant or animal) or habitats with several rare species or best examples or plant communities. No attributes for any layer.
