| DATABASE ABSTRACT (A brief summary of the data set): |

| Collection of all commerically landed finfish and shellfish. Some
recreational information is also collected. Works in cooperation
with the Potomac River Fisheries Commission and the National
Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). Information collected includes
species, pounds, dockside value, county landed, water area caught,
gear and month.

| The information collected (inshore and offshore species) is used
to manage the fisheries offshore Virginia.

| Agency regulations administer the process by which the
information is collected.
We have cooperative agreements with NMFS and PRFC.
Some FMPS require the tracking of commerical fisheries. |

Other: This database has never been released in its
entirety. Much interpretation is needed when using this
information. Also, all landings are preliminary.

| 1973-1992 was voluntary collection from dealers. If they got
upset at VMRC they would stop cooperating sometimes.
1993-present is mandatory collection from fishermen. Still
not 100%. Do not have enough staff to track 100% compliance.

familiar with the fisheries visually review the data and make
corrections.
