This effort is part of the Virginia Gap Analysis Project  (VAGAP). The cornerstone of this work is a detailed vegetation community map (habitat map). The intent of the map I am presenting here is to be the upper level in the VAGAP vegetation community mapping hierarchy. The lower levels of this land cover map will be delineated in the later stages of the Gap project. These more detailed vegetation classes will be used to map wildlife throughout Virginia. Gap Analysis is funded by U.S.G.S. Division of Biological Resources (what was former the National Biological Service). In Virginia we receive about equal support from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. I would like to thank both of these groups as well as the many cooperators we have throughout Virginia. I would also like to thank everyone at the Fish and Wildlife Information Exchange, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, Virginia Tech. This is where the bulk of the work is being done.
