This photograph is an excellent demonstration of the problem of topo-shading. In the foreground there is a small depression containing a stand of conifers. The rest of the foreground is brighter and dominated by deciduous trees. The background has bands of bright and dark areas related to topography. It is difficult to impossible to tell whether the dark background areas are coniferous or deciduous forest. The hyperclusters have the same problem.
