This figure is an initial hypercluster classification in a mountainous area of Virginia. The dark green represents conifers, green deciduous, blue-green mixed forest, yellow herbaceous, blue water, orange shrub, and red disturbed. The ridge lines are very obvious because the brighter south facing slopes are classified as deciduous, while the darker north facing slopes are labeled coniferous. This does not happen in reality. An extreme topographic error is evident in the lower right of this figure, where there appears to be water on the side of the mountain. This is the result of deep shadows.
