| These are the categories in which I labeled each 30m pixel of the Commonwealth. This classification is intended for wildlife applications, therefore, basic vegetation structure was the focus. Forest communities were broken down the furthest because trees are the dominant natural vegetation phase. Mixed forest is a matrix of deciduous and coniferous tree species, neither of which is over 40% of the basal area. Shrub/scrub is woody vegetation shorter than tree size (less than 3m). Disturbed areas are characterized by a lack of vegetation. Most agriculture, lawns, recent clearcuts, and old fields fall into the herbaceous category. |
