body nearly round; greatest thickness 80% of depth; caudal peduncle
compressed; scales deciduous with even edges; scutes lacking; head low,
moderately long, eye with much adipose tissue; maxillary obliquely
rounded posteriorly, reaching under anterior margin of eye; gill rakers
slender, close-set; single series of teeth on lower mandible, row on
margin of maxillaries, few on premaxillaries; very small granular teeth
on vomer, palatines, pterygoids, and tongue; pelvic fins inverted
somewhat posterior to a vertical from base of last dorsal ray; pectoral
fins reaching <1/2 way to pelvics; pigmentation, olive green above,
silver below; maximum length=380 mm *1229*; REPRODUCTION: season in
eastern Gulf of Mexico from mid-October to late May (peak January and
May), in Hawaiian waters from mid-October through mid-July (peak late
April) *3724,3726*; usually spawn in evening or at night *3724,3726*;
surface water temperatures range 16.5-26.5 C (most at 21-26 C)
*3724,3726,3857*; spawn offshore, primarily between 30-200 m depth
contour with most occurring at depths greater than 50 m *3724*;
fecundity at 130-165 mm SL is 7,446-19,699 *3724*; relative fecundity
(ova per gram of body weight) 150-428 ova/gram, mean=296.5 ova/g *3724*;
fertilized eggs are bouyant, smooth, transparent, diameter=1.17-1.53 mm,
yolk pale yellow and lightly segmented *3723,3726,3857*; incubation 36
hrs at 20.5 C, about 48 hrs at 23-25 C, about 50 hrs at 21-22 C, and 135
hours at 11 C *3724,3726,3857*; development of eggs, larvae, and
juveniles described by Jones *1229*; size at maturity=100 mm TL *3724*
BEHAVIOR: adults are pelagic, schooling, pattern of movement is unknown
*1229*; larvae found in surface waters in and around spawning areas,
larger specimens occur in mid- to bottom waters *3723*;
AQUATIC/TERRESTRIAL ASSOCIATIONS: predator=white marlin (Tetrapturus
albidus) *3727*; POPULATION PARAMETERS: daily mortality rates for larvae
in the Gulf of Mexico were 12.1-12.3% *3724*; it is probable that
mortality from eggs to 15.5 mm larvae is more than 98.3% *3724*
