In the western North Atlantic, it has been taken in trawls from depths of 622-1976 m, although the depth of regular occurrence on the Nova Scotian slope area was about 731 m. Although not commonly captured by commercial fishing, there is evidence that it is not uncommon at depths of 731-1097 m *258*. Habitat Associations - 1

LIFE HISTORY

Growth: Information on growth rates of specimens from Canadian Atlantic waters has not been published. Largest male recorded was about 83.6 cm TL; largest female 102.5 cm TL *258*. Reproduction: Fertilization is internal. The longnose chimaera is oviparous and deposits each egg enclosed in an elongate or spindle-shaped egg capsule. One egg case examined was 16.5 cm long, taken at 686 m depth. Collection of a newborn specimen on 20 June 1949 and report of one taken 21 August 1884 indicate young hatch during summer *258*. Description: Body elongate, stout anteriorly, tapering evenly to slender caudal peduncle. Head large; snout prolonged, stiff, triangular, narrow, male with cartilaginous hook (clasper) on forehead; mouth small, inferior, with fleshy lips; teeth a series of flat plates on jaws, vomer, and palatines, appearance incisorlike; eye large, prominent. Gill opening a slit anterior to base of pectoral fin, gills covered with flap of skin. Fins: dorsals, 2, first dorsal triangular, anterior margin supported by strong spine, outer edge free, second dorsal long, low, connected with first dorsal by low fold of skin; caudal lanceolate, tapering to prolonged, slender filament; anal may be separate from caudal, or not separated; pelvics, tips pointed or rounded, abdominal, modified to form claspers in males; pectorals large, wing-like. Scales absent. Lateral line present. Size to at least 91 cm TL. Color uniformly chocolate brown; fins with darker edging; females with paler areas *258*.
