LIFE HISTORY
REPRODUCTION: 2 eggs usually once a season; do renest if
necessary *1168*; incubation by both sexes lasts 21 days *1168*;
incubation lasts about 22 days *559* BEHAVIOR: young swim readily
*1168*; parents bring fish to young *1168*; nest in large colonies
*484*; nest site=on higher part of beach (dunes, ridges) usually where
there is vegetation which shades and conceals nest; nest is hollow in
sand usually lined with dry grass *1168*; foraging strategy=feed in
diffused flocks; capable of feeding over large areas in smaller numbers
than other terns and at certain locations, like tide rips *484*; ORIGIN:
breeds locally from Nova Scotia to Virginia and south *404*; POPULATION
PARAMETERS: no definite breeding record in Virginia since 1927 *700*;
Byrd claims the roseate tern is probably extirpated from Virginia as a
breeding species *452* AQUATIC/TERRESTRIAL ASSOCIATIONS; associates on
breeding grounds with common tern, sandwich tern, laughing gull, and
sooty tern; avian predation from owls, marsh hawks, and crows *1168*
