LIFE HISTORY
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: males are 20 feet long, females 18
feet; black with gray patches on the belly, pectoral fins are 1/5 of
body length; dorsal fin is falcate and far forward on the back; head is
bulbous *1043,1035*; REPRODUCTION: breeding season is fall; 13-16 month
gestation period; 1 offspring/reproductive period/2 years; males
sexually mature at 13 years, females at 6 years *1044*; BEHAVIOR:
gregarious; lives in large schools which is led by a large old male;
uses echo-location but sometimes large groups are stranded; young are
weaned at 20-22 months *1043,1035*
