LIFE HISTORY
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: length=9 feet (2.7 m); body is robust
with a distinct beak; the dorsal fin is tall, falcate and located just
behind the mid-point of the body; flippers are located forward on the
body; tail fluke spread is 1/5 to 1/6 of body length; keels are well
marked; dorsum is black, ventrum is white, sides are marked with a large
white oval patch; on each row of the jaw are 30-34 small (5 mm
diameter), sharp teeth; vertebral formula is
C7+T15+L18-22+Ca38-41=78-82; phalangeal formula is I:1-2, II:10, III:6,
IV:2-3, V:2 *2094,1037*; REPRODUCTION: breeding season is summer and
fall; gestation lasts 10 months; 1 offspring/reproductive period
