LIFE HISTORY
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: length=2.1 m; dorsum is dark gray,
ventrum is white or gray, with many small gray spots all over the body;
top of the beak is black; a black line runs from the eye to the base of
the flipper, all fins are dark and small; 46-65 (usually 55) teeth on
each side of both jaws; 72-73 vertebrae *1043,1037*; REPRODUCTION:
reproductive peaks may occur in spring and fall; gestation period is
10.6 months; 1 offspring/reproductive period; females cannot lactate
while pregnant *1043,1048*; BEHAVIOR: common name comes from the
behavior of spinning around its own body axis; gregarious
