CHECKLIST OF THE BIRDS OF AFGHANISTAN

Over 450 birds have been recorded from Afghanistan, a landlocked nation encompassing an area of 636,265 sq. km., where the high peaks of the Hindu Kush mountain range rise over 6000 m. It is these mountains that form a formidable barrier to migrating birds during their spring and fall migrations. Stranded by the clouds on the high passes large flocks of birds rest at the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains. Spring is a time of northward migration for a large number of waterfowl. They rest in the wetlands of Ab-e Istada, Dasht-e Nawar and the travertine lakes of Band-e Amir plus a large number of smaller mountain lakes. Ab-e Istada and Nawar are visited by thousands of greater falmingos. Dasht-e Nawar, at an altitude of 3200 m., forms the highest breeding ground of the species. On the other hand the wetlands of Hamun-e Puzak and Saberi, formed as a result of the emptying of the Helmand, Farah and Harut rivers in the Seistan basin, provide a wintering site for half a million waterfowl and waders. Unfortunately, as a result of incessant drought, which is in its fifth year, these wetlands including those of Ab-e Istada and Dasht-e Nawar have become dry. This phenomenon is not unique to the desert setting of Afghanistan and historical records suggest that the area has undergone such droughts in the past. With the normalization of precipitation patterns the wetlands have once again regained their vigor in the past.

The majority of birds found in Afghanistan are related to the Palearctic region which comprises Europe, the Mediterranean and northern Asia. Many of the resident birds are desert specialists such as larks and wheatears. The eastern part of the country is influenced by the Oriental region and species with Himalayan affinities are found in the forests of Nuristan and the Spinghar range. Parakeets, jays and drongos are found in these forested areas, which are disappearing fast as a result of a high demand for lumber inside the country and the smuggling of wood into neighboring Pakistan.

Over 150 species of birds have been recorded from the central mountains. Here the Salang Pass forms a major flyway during the spring and autumn migrations for a large number of birds such as storks, cranes, starlings, and numerous species of waterfowl and waders, which migrate from their wintering grounds to northern latitudes in spring. The chukar, Himalayan snowcock, choughs, ravens, eagles and buzzards, together with vultures are some of the more characteristic birds encountered in the Hindu Kush valleys. Kestrels are by far the more abundant raptors of this zone.

The arid semi-deserts and lowlands harbor few breeding birds. During the migration season the avifauna of this region is enriched by large concentrations of larks and pipits. Sparrows and swallows are common year round in towns and villages.

Beside the few saline wetlands the rivers of Afghanistan form a major wetland zone. These rivers take their source in the central mountains and flow into the steppes of the north or the arid plains and deserts of the Seistan basin. Water dependent species such as wagtails, plovers, shanks and sandpipers may be seen along the banks of the rivers and the wetlands which are formed by overflowing banks during the spring floods. Cranes, egrets and herons are also present along the shores if they are not disturbed by human activity. Hunting of these birds is common practice throughout Afghanistan. Depending on the area, villagers have devised blinds and traps to catch the birds. Lack of legislation means hunting can take place at any time of the year and there are no limits on the number of birds hunted. Such practices not only pose a threat to endemics but migrating species are also affected by hunting and alteration of habitat such as the drying of wetlands. Habitat degradation, accompanied by drought, may have resulted in the loss of wetlands of international importance such as Ab-e Istada which has been a breeding ground for large number of waterfowl and a stopover for thousands of water birds which use the Salang corridor on their way to the northern latitudes.
