Formation: Semi-evergreen
Seasonal Forest |
| Description:
This
is an ephemeral stream along a coffee plantation. The vegetation northwards
for ~ 250 meters is a coffee understory with a forest overstory, beyond
which is a cornfield. To the south is mowed grass for ~ 50 meters to the
roadbed. The stream averages no more than 1 meter in width and no more
than 1 meter deep, and is normally filled with running water during the
rainy season. The forest is known locally as "alkalche", with a level canopy,
12-20 feet high. Most tree species lose their leaves during the dry season,
when much light reaches the ground. The top few inches of soil are pale-grey
in color, suggesting that most humus has been oxidized and the nutrients
lost. Epiphytes and ground sedges are common. This site has been monitored
by Carolyn and Bruce Miller since 1997. |

trees intact. During 1995, the north side dried completely for the first
time in recent memory. Sapote-Silion forest, with mahogany, mylady, ramon,
and give-and-take palm. Soils are well-drained, gravelly, with brownish-greyclays
