Building Permits and Zone Regulations |
You have to have a building permit to make almost any change in your place in the neighborhood. The message seems pretty stern:
Effective immediately (2002) the Town will be strictly enforcing criminal sanctions for work being done in the town without a building permit when a permit is required. If a permit is not obtained prior to start of work, criminal charges will be filed against the individual working without a permit as stated in the Virginia U.S. Building Code. Please note that a permit has not legally been issued until it has been paid for and a signed copy is posted on the job site.
The building department thanks you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions about whether or not work being done on your residence requires a building permit please call 961-1125.
How do you obtain a building permit?
Complete and submit a Building Permit application to the Planning & Engineering Department well before you plan to start work.
Submit 2 sets of building plans that show any changes being made or the complete addition being made to the property.
For new construction as well as for additions to existing structures, submit 2 copies of an accurately scaled plot plan or survey that contains all existing buildings, impervious surfaces (like driveways), and any planned additions. The closest distance from the proposed construction to the lot lines must be shown.
Effective July 1, 2002, the minimum building permit fee will be $25.00.
Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance Review
Citizens may recommend changes or corrections to either the Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Ordinance document by contacting Steve Hundley, Zoning Administrator, at 961-1115.
