Assignment 12

Please read Chapter 8, part 1 and 3. You will see several references to population exercises with the Capper programs. Use as many of them as you have time for them. The latter ones that allow you to structure a population as see how it changes over 5 years is the model toward which you build. Se if you can structure a population that will be fairly stable over 5 years. Then use the random numbers to simulate natural conditions and see if you can still get a stable population.

Read Chapter 9, also about populations, but with emphasis on manipulating them.

Use the following questions to work back through your notes as you begin to prepare for the final exam...tentatively with the same schedule, the evening of May 11.

Define faunal resource system management.

Sketch the general system of general systems theory, labeling correctly all parts and arrow directions.

What is a life group?

What is faunal space? How does it differ from habitat?

Give 3 examples of isomorphism.

What is a magic number. Give your best example.

What are the 7 types of objectives.

What is the present value of $12,000 over 30 years at 6%?

Pick a best action using objective weighting (3 objectives, 3 actions, and different weights for each objective)

List the major components (the minimum set)of population dynamics.

List those of population structure.

Graph the likely relations of faunal benefit to population abundance

How many permits should be issued if hunters are 17% successful and 2300 animals need to be harvested to bring a population into balance?

There are 56 males and 112 females. What is the proper sex ratio?

There are 56% females in a population. What is the sex ratio?

A population is increasing at a rate of 0.03 per year. What is its doubling time? Using a compound interest formulation, what will the future population be if it (560 animals) is increasing at a constant average rate of 0.02?

A perfect R2 score is 1.0 or 0?

What is the Shannon-Weiner diversity equation? Is a community more (or less) diverse the larger or smaller the index value?

What is the species-area equation? Its parts?

Experts can use a beta approach to estimating time, areas, numbers of animals, etc. Give a simple example of how it is used.

What does synergism mean?

What is feedforward. Give a very clear example.

How does a performance measure from an objective?

What is winter range?

What are the 4 major strategies of game theory?

Graph negative feedback. Relate it to wildlife management.

List with a sentence or 2 at least 5 strong examples of cross-currents in wildlife management and Gamma Theory.

Why Gamma Theory?

Why behavioral change; why not education?

Why not pest control; why integrated vertebrate damage management?

What is an n-dimensional hypervolume?
