In a nutshell...

The Departure is a book about staying in Dickenson County, Virginia and similar places. This is a free book for the people of a troubled county, one of seven such counties in the Virginia coalfield. There are similar areas throughout the U.S. and the world. The author suggests a radical departure from past efforts in rural development. It provides an analysis done by the author over many years and lays out a potential for the future of the county. Rejecting some of the cures of the past, the author outlines a diverse, sophisticated, modern, for-profit approach to rural land and resource management. Large problems require large solutions and a large and complex one is suggested. The book elaborates on the paradigm and practical elements of Lasting Forests. The solution is profit and incentive driven, relating the resources and spaces of the mountains to a fossil-energy-short world of the future, linking via the Internet to the rest of the world, and achieving new levels of health and quality of life for the residents of the county. Operating in the private sector, "government" of the complex proposed enterprise is achieved as in a corporation, a conglomerate, dedicated to long-term sustained profit which requires sustained resource benefits and a vital society.
