Cross Currents - The List

In 1998 I attended a lecture on wildlife management and heard the same topics that I had heard as a student 40 years earlier. I think many topics and understandings have changed or are changing...and need to change to assure the wild faunal benefits needed by people in the future. Cross Currents seeks to briefly state the places where change is needed, where conflicts exist, and where I believe an alternative is better in most situations than the past concept.

    Objectives and Goals: Why Manage?

  1. Definitions and Starting Premises
  2. Meanders vs. Objectives
  3. Efficiency vs. Effectiveness
  4. Injury vs. Damage

What to manage? species, populations, or what?

  5. Species vs. Life Group

    For whom is management done?

  6. Managers vs. Clients
  7. Agency vs. Enterprise
  8. States vs. Regions
  9. National vs. International Efforts
  10. Solutions vs. Continuance

    Where is management best done?

  11. Area vs. Volume
  12. Fauna vs. Ecosystems
  13. Watersheds vs. Unique Land Cells (GIS Pixels)

What are major management (process) concepts?

  14. Curve Fitting vs. Theory Building
  15. Research vs. the Rationally Robust

Under development:

  1. Biology vs. Ecology (insects, fish)
  2. Education vs. Neo-Didactics (Ranger group)
  3. Rational vs. Reasonable (Game theory, etc. strategies, chaos)
  4. Wildlife (pop) vs. Resource Systems (Total) (5E)
  5. Police Power vs. Enforcement Systems
  6. Zoology vs. Management (mgmt. vs. sci.)
  7. Vertical Edge vs. Horizontal Layers
  8. Habitat Quality vs. Area
  9. Animals vs. Extra Animals
  10. Animals vs. Benefits
  11. Linear vs. Non-Linear
  12. Sequential vs. Simultaneous
  13. Diversity vs. Variety
  14. Random Sampling vs. Area-Proportional Sampling
  15. Managers vs. Clients
  16. Cumulative vs. Discrete Effects
  17. Science-based Management vs. Game Theory
  18. Ranging vs. Outdoor Recreation and Wildlife Watching
  19. Public vs. Private Land Management Systems (see #7)
