An Expert System Plan
Spurr (1952:320) suggested characteristics of sites. It seems likely that an expert system can be created to specify site quality (without measured tree height) within reasonable limits. The criteria in various Boolean combinations might be:
Poor Sites
- low timber density
- scattered ground vegetation
- trees short but with broad , rounded, and thin crowns(form class)
- only a few species present
- low height attained for mature timber
- relative height (age of equal height tree on poor site will be greater than that on a good site)
- tree height to crown diameter ratio - older trees on poorer site will have a larger crown
- see McCombs (1998) ms thesis on land form relations.
- See Alpha Unit notes and also Site Index notes of Giles
- Tree ring count in last 1 inch of growth at dbh
