David L. Trauger is the Director of Natural Resources Programs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's Northern Virginia Campus located in Falls Church and Alexandria, Virginia. Since 2001, Dr. Trauger is a Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Science in the College of Natural Resources, where he has taught courses in Conservation Ecology, Global Issues in Natural Resources, Ecosystem Management, and Sustainability Science. His academic experience includes an Assistant Professorship at Iowa State University, where he taught Wildlife Conservation and Environmental Biology for 5 years (1967-72). Previously, he also held Adjunct Professorships at George Mason University, where he taught "Endangered Species Policy and Management" in 1992, and at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he taught "Conservation Ecology" in 1998 and 2000.
Prior to his academic appointment, he was a Senior Staff Biologist in the Biological Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey. He received a B.S. (1964) and M.S. (1967) in Wildlife Biology and a Ph.D. (1971) in Animal Ecology from Iowa State University. During 1966-1970, he also conducted pioneering research on age-related productivity of Lesser Scaup in the Subarctic Taiga on the Precambrian Shield north of Great Slave Lake near Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. In 1972, he joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and led field studies on the breeding biology and migrational ecology of diving ducks in Canada and the North Central States (1972-79). Between 1975 and 1996, he held a series of research management positions in the Washington Office and at the Northern Prairie Science Center and Patuxent Wildlife Research Center with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Biological Service, prior to its merger with U.S. Geological Survey.
For 14 years, he served on the Advisory Committee to the College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources at Virginia Tech. He is a member of The Wildlife Society, Society for Conservation Biology, American Fisheries Society, Society of American Foresters, Wildlife Management Institute, Natural Resources Council of America, Renewable Natural Resources Foundation, Soil and Water Conservation Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and several other conservation and environmental organizations.
