Under development
This unit is being developed to address the role of forest and rural land management in producing, storing or conservation, and influencing improved use of limited fossil energy resources.
Energy and energy budgeting is an evident part of almost every unit of The Trevey but herein we attempt to make explicit the direct action we plan to take to gather, conserve, and improve use of available energy. We have grave concerns for future people living in the high-risk, fossil-energy-short future and thus for a society quite unlike that of the present. We seek ways to demonstrate appropriate responses now to that predicted future as well as ways to prepare for the best possible local conditions for the people living here then.
Seterrain is one response.

A list of detailed steps for collecting materials with high embodied energy is available.
While agriculture is a high water and energy user, the future energy costs of pollution-cleanup and the isotopes of war and defunct nuclear power plants will probably exceed them.
Energy Conservation Techniques and Strategies
- Heating and cooling are biggest energy users in the home system.
- Reduce duct leaks into unheated spaces. (safely or with a contractor)
- Close fireplace damper unless fire is lit.
- When using the fireplace, lower thermostat to 50-55 degrees, open dampers in base of firebox or open windows 1 inch. Caulk the flue damper and hearth. Close doors to room with fireplace -- all to make the fireplace more efficient.
- Gain 10% efficienvy by turning back thermometer 10-15 percent for 8 hours (when sleeping, away, etc.)
- Replace windows with energy efficient ones
- Use proper amounts of insulation
- Wrap hot water tanks with insulation.
- Install or repair window and door insulation
- Use draperies on windows.
- Plant shade trees on the south facing side of the building; remove conifer trees from the south-facing side unless they are efficient wind protection
