Policy-Shaping within The Trevey

It is now well known that actions on the land can be and are influenced by policy of many types. (Policy is discussed as a type of objective in Forest Faunal Systems, Chapter 4.) Within The Trevey we attempt, by practice and comments to influence policy on lands in the region and elsewhere over many years. Many of the policies can be teased from the preface to The Trevey. Not subtle or hidden, the key elements of our on-going proposed policy are:

  1. Increasing multisector involvement in wildland use and development -- development of broadscale, total production systems including profits computed from many resources of the land (more than timber);
  2. Limited reservation of land but maximum intensive management including that of land and people at the edges of the ownerships;
  3. Transition to a 50-year or more planning horizon, one sliding forward one year, each year, with concurrent analyses of 5, 30, 50, and 120- year discounting periods;
  4. Resource development supportive of community development, equitable tax base, and educational and employment opportunities.
