Using the Radio
Although TV is very popular, the radio represents an important communication medium for people in rural areas. They have persoanl listening devices, and many farm units have radios. The are common in barns and trucks. The coverage of news and information is much different that that for TV. The owner should consider the potentials, at leasts as a marketing strategy. International groups have studied increasing the effectiveness of its use for spreading research results and they recommend the following "management issues" re-phrased for the landowner addressed by the Trevey:
- Identify the financial resources that will improve collaboration between the owner and the broadcaster
- Identify common objectives and needs of the owner and the radio facility owner
- Demonstrate the added value of work together
- Include all stake holders in the process
- Analyze radio station coverage and how to eliminate gaps
- Analyze typical listening times of audience segments and respond to them
- Evaluate the impact of owner and radio collaboration
- Identifu common objectives of target communities, the owner, and the radio facility
- Manage training (content development, training of trainers, implementation, evaluation)
- Set priorities for content delivered
- Develop a longterm program (a "curriculum")
- Identify roles and responsibilities
- Include radio staff in work and tours of the area; develop a partnership.
- Report on progress and effects of radio use in research and in implementing research results on the land.
