Forestry industry in 11 southern states lease 75% of their land and hunting leases bring in a net average of about $2.05 an acre. In Virginia, the average is about $1.07. The industries believe that public relation and other benefits exceed the direct monetary gains from the leases.
The Deer Group staff believe that this gross, average figure in no way reflects the potential income that is possible with marketing, land management, managed hunts, and other strategies and programs. Using such annual income in forest investment analyses, just as one example, can drastically alter the decisions made by land owners about timber harvests, land use, and sale value. The Deer Group staff may assist in making such analyses.
