One Way to Estimate the Deer Harvest

How many deer are taken in the hunting season? It is difficult to estimate the number.

If 1000 deer "tags" are reported and staff check every deer they can find in the field, food lockers, etc. and find 200 deer, and then check which of these are among the deer for which tags have been received (for example, 190), then the estimated harvest is 1052 [that is 1000/(190/200)].

Many different estimates are made to arrive at a useful number. Estimating harvests as well as the population in the field is very difficult. The arithmetic is simple; checking on all of the animals is difficult, time consuming, and costly.
