An Electronic Baton for Races
under development
Once imagined as a radio locator for hunting dogs and for determining the accuracy in following a scent-trail, the electronic baton idea may be feasible.
The concept is probably related to the invisible fence used to confine dogs. The dog wears a collar device and when it passes over a burried wire, the dog is shocked. The equivalent: when the baton is passed over a wire at the finish line, a radio signal is sent to a reciever, marking a clock and producing a digital "time."
The concept is proposed for development for highschool races and others world wide. Instead of the photo-finish of the chest crossing the tape, the new race becomes that of extending the baton to signal race completion.
First uses are suggested for the Tetra, a cross-country relay race, the baton being passed among runners or other participants.
