Structural Geology
The bottom of the Alpha unit

In 2004 correspondence was begun with Professor Marilyn Dew Maisano of Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, about a geology unit within Rural System. The ideas are fragmentary and correspondence was interrupted by household moves and my delays.

The potentials seem to be in:

1. Geophysics (salt areas and farm plans as in Australia and coastal
2. Publications, especially the base within The Trevey and elsewhere
3. Local tours
4. Regional, national, and international tours
5. Distance learning courses and extended tours
6. Publications and distance learning for SOL materials in schools
7. Consulting
8. Affiliation with the GIS Group.
   • Access to most-recent state and regional geological data sources
   • Surface geology related to probable soil categories
   • Fault zones
   • Karst topography and caves
   • Retrospective and predictive topography, shorelines, and flood plains
   • Ancient stream flow estimation based on stream rock size and shape
   • Developing a groundwater unit related to well logs, legislation, USGS local resources, and affiliation with New River watershed groups to address attention to that resource, eventually becoming a separate unit of Rural System
   • Developing connections with coal mining (and other mining) and its reclamation activities, designing and reporting restoration and other related procedures.
9. Exploration of raw material sources for proposed products (cut aged limestone weights; cut coal fossil patterns, rock layer columns as art objects, aquarium sands and objects)
10. Predictive soil nutrients from parent materials
11. Expanded practical relations of geological factors to land use (topics often within "environmental geology")
