Friends of the Base

Many parks, sanctuaries, forest, and environmental areas have developed organizations often called "friends of ... ." These are organizations of people who have visited the area, appreciated or benefitted from what they saw or experienced there, and want to help protect, perpetuate, or enhance those conditions. The "Friends of ... " groups have quite varied structure. Some raise funds to support ancillary needs of the area not readily gained by existing funding sources or budgetary policy. Some respond to needs that, because of a low value or priority, may not be met for years in a normal budgetary sequence. Some are legislative or advisory. Some are merely a group of ardent users and appreciators of the area and receive newsletters about developments, timely visits, or opportunities. Because public land areas are so closely related to local community economy, the "Friends of ..." groups are often encouraged or promoted by Chamber of Commerce groups.

The plan is to encourage the creation and continued support of a Friends group.
