Computing Edge Volumes and Indices to the Quality of Such Volumes

Juxtaposition Principle - Often associated with interspersion of wildlife habitat units and the edges of such units, this is the expression of the relative value to a species of two types being adjacent. It expresses the difference to a local population of a named species of wild animals , for example, of a corn field being adjacent to a wheat field vs. a cornfield being adjacent to a fallow field.

Edge is analyzed separately as volume.

Interspersion is an area concept and expresses the goodness of (or importance of) the arrangements of faunal space units (often with diversity or variety indices, counts of corners and line transect intercepts) to a species or life group.

The following are simple approximate numbers for working through problems with contiguity, edge lengths within an area, edge volumes, and then combining the quality of the edge (a juxtaposition index) for a single species or life group. In the Juxtaposition Matrix shown below, the numbers in the diagonal, 8, 10, etc. is the average value of a tract of this cover type and age to a designated species. Otherwise the paired relationships exist, the higher numbers represent estimated of higher relative value to the named species. These indices are of limited value since rarely is "all outside of the area" (in other words F), considered, and never evaluated. The indices become more meaningful as the area and number of units increase and the more homogeneous the "Outside" conditions.
