Physical description: This is a laterally blotched or VW-patterned darter of moderate size, with the adults usually 35-50 mm SL. The body form is moderate to somewhat elongate, slightly compressed. The snout is moderate or somewhat pointed, lips moderately prominent; frenum absent or moderately well developed; branchiostegal membranes seperate or slighty conjoined; caudal fin slightly emarginate or truncate. The breeding male has individual tubercles and keratinized ridges on the anal and pelvic rays, and tubercles on the belly scales. The lateral line is incomplete or complete, pored scales 38-47; total midlateral scales 45-53; transverse scales 9-12 [(9)10-112(14)]; circumpeduncle scales 15-17 [(11)16-19(21)]. Dorsal spines 11-13 [11-13(14)]; darsal rays 10-12 [11-13]; anal spines 2 in both; belly naked to fully scaled in both; cheek 0-10% scaled [0-50%, usually 10-40%]; opercle usually at least 70% scaled in both; nape 50-90% scaled [60-100%, usually 90-100%]. Juvenile and nonbreeding adult dorsum olive, laterally staw-yellow, venter cream. The male has a hint of nuptial coloration out of breeding season. The breeding male with deep metallic (electric) blue lateral bars; ground pattern of side a series of fine oblique white to pale blue lines, one line per scale row; between line the scales are olive-orange or burnt orange, becoming more yellow on caudal peduncle; dorsum olive; breast and gular black, remaining venter dusky gray. Head dark olive; lips, cheek and opercle deep metallic blue. First dorsal fin distal band deep blue; subdistal white, submarginal orange; narrow median pale white; epibassal deep blue; basal dusky black to clear. Second dorsal with black base fading to dusky margin; medially and sub- medially on anterior few membranes is deep blue irregular area; anterior rays, disal to later area and extending to posterior membranes, subtle yellow. Caudal base and upper and lower margins deep blue; anal black distally with hint of iridescent yellow, basally deep blue; pelvic black, rays distally with hint of iridescent yellow, pectoral base iridescent blue-green, rays basally iridescent bronzed. Adult female generally pale, some with hints of blue and yellow-orange in the same areas as the male *4205*. Reproduction: In much of its range, spawning occures within late March to possibly late May. Males were in brilliant color from late March to late April in Virginia, in gental flow of pool shallows and moderate runs. Nuptial males are territorial; the female is an egg-burier *4205*.
