ITS WINTER FOOD IS UNKNOWN *131*. IN A NEW JERSEY STUDY, IT FED PREDOMINANTLY ON GREEN, SUCCULENT MONOCOTYLEDENOUS PLANTS, AND ALSO ON WOODY STEMS AND ROOTS, MOSS AND FUNGUS *PA4764*, HUCKLEBERRIES, AND BLUEBERRIES DURING SUMMER. XERPHYLLUM ASPHDELOIDES (TURKEYBEARD) AND CHAMAEDAPHNE CALYCULATA (LEATHER LEAF) ARE EATEN IN GREATER PROPORTION FROM LATE FALL TO EARLY SPRING *PA4764*. Synaptomys cooperi is almost exclusively herbivorous, feeding primarily on the tender parts of herbaceous plants, especially leaves, stems and seeds of grasses and sedges. It also feeds on mosses, fruits, fungi, bark, roots, and occassionally insects *PA10176:3, 84:107*. Of 86 stomachs analyzed from animals captured throughout the year green vegetation made up 66% by volume, while 14% was made up of fruits of huckleberries and blueberries. In Kentucky primary food items during winter and spring were fescue (Festuca sp.), bluegrass (Poa. sp.), panic grass (Panicum), and manna grass (Glycera striata). In Virginia, broomsedge made up the major part of the summer diet, while mosses were eaten more in winter. Endogone sp., a fungus has been reported or several occassions from Synaptomys stomach *PA10176:3*. It principal food is green, succulent grasses and sedges *9133*. The winter food is unknown *131*. They consume a wide variety of leafy and grassy material *8905*.
