Why do you want to be chair-elect Darren?

Ever since the first annual TWS Conference in Albuquerque, I have witnessed tremendous interest in GIS and remote sensing issues from TWS members, but working group involvement in meetings and the overall organization has been spotty. Tom Sklebar put on a fantastic symposium in Albuquerque, but since then, the working group has had positive annual meeting, but a general lack of follow-through after the meetings. I would like to become an officer to help current officers smooth out our visibility problems, and put the working group back on a productive track. I am very interested in GIS and remote sensing tools, and would like to spend some of my time helping others, especially students, find out more about these tools and what they have to offer wildlife professionals.

Hobbies and Interests

Camping, hiking, fishing. Dick fishes avidly despite the 1.5 million southern Californians in his immediate vicinity! Dick also enjoys teaching at the University of Redlands and working with biologists and environmental professionals customizing GIS applications at ESRI. Dick expressed particular interest in making sure that sound biology does not get tangled up and lost in the average GIS graphical user interface. Dick is a father and husband who enjoys the balance and sanity that family life offers the average, over-committed, GIS/wildlife professional. Dick also enjoys learning new things and coming up with new ways to visualize problems and their solutions. He is on an eternal quest for knowledge wherever it can be found.

Why do you want to be Secretary/Treasurer Dick?

To try and return what the group has given to me: a forum to learn, grow, and make contacts in the field of GIS. Also, to promote sound use of GIS in the realm of wildlife and other natural resources management.
